All equipment and plant must be stored correctly and managed effectively to ensure its safety, security, and availability when needed. Well-managed and secure stores also help prevent additional charges for lost or damaged equipment.

The stores on each project may be located within the main site compound and/or in satellite sites, where appropriate and where effective control, security, and management can be implemented.

It is important that location and orientation of the stores is considered in relation to type and number of deliveries which are required to maintain the stores and levels of equipment available

  • Ensure all units are installed with:
    • A heavy-duty anti-tamper door lock shroud or a mortice door lock with an internal mechanism must be fitted.
    • A heavy-duty wood floor.
    • Door stay mechanism, which should automatically apply itself upon opening.
    • Sufficient internal and external lighting.
    • Ventilation, lighting and heating if used as a workspace for the store person.
    • Ventilation, if petrol-powered hand tools will be stored within the unit. Battery-powered tools must not be charged in standard storage units (Refer to site electrical supply section).
  • Identify if internal racking is required; if so, this must be:
    • Designed and approved by the temporary works team.
    • Inspected regularly and marked with a weight load tag confirming the maximum load capacity for each bay/shelf.
    • Not made of timber unless approved through the temporary works team.
  • Ensure general stores are not used as a COSHH store. Units specifically designed for storing COSHH items must be in place before hazardous substances are brought to site. Certain COSHH items are required to be stored separately e.g. fuel and oil must be stored separately from cleaning materials.
  • Ensure there is a specific unit for the storage of flammable liquids. These must be secure, lockable and operated through a key fob mechanism allocated to specific individuals.
  • Any unit is emptied before being transported or lifted.
  • Ensure that there is a mechanism in place to effectively manage the stores if there isn’t a store person appointed on the project.
  • Ensure that there is clear signage and a list is included in the stores on the inside of the door to save time looking for items.
  • Ensure there is a separate unit for the Engineers’ stores. This should be a lockable room or unit. It should be located near an entrance/exit to limit the distance equipment needs to be carried to the site/engineers vehicle.
  • The proximity of any COSHH/gas cages to the main accommodation building.
