Quiet spaces include first aid, multi-faith, quiet, and nursing rooms.
The space(s)/room(s) must be private and not be used for storage, business purposes and
must be available for use by colleagues as required.
Where the compound space is limited, the requirement for a dedicated quiet space(s)/room(s) should be risk assessed to determine a need.
With consideration given to limitations imposed by project value, duration, and the physical size of the compound area, the site establishment team must endeavour to provide:
- Where possible, a separate room for each of the following rooms within the main site compound.
- Medical/first aid room (requirements for the space are detailed later on in this section).
- Multi-faith room (requirements for the space are detailed later on in this section).
- Quiet room (requirements for the space are detailed later on in this section).
- If it is not possible, due to the size of the site compound to provide separate rooms, then one room which fulfils the requirement of all rooms can be included – a ‘Multi-use’ room (requirements for the space are detailed later on in this section). First aid and Multi-faith rooms are the priority within any site site establishment.
- Ensure the room(s) are on the ground floor and accessible for all colleagues.
- Locate the room(s) in quiet/quieter areas within the site compound/office facility.
- Consider the size of these room(s) based on the number of colleagues/visitors.
- Ensure the room(s) is comfortably furnished, e.g:
- Comfy chair and/or sofa with compliant fire ratings.
- Rug.
- Lamps.

- Ensure the environment is well-ventilated and with natural daylight.
- Blinds or curtains are provided for privacy.
- Ensure there are several 13amp sockets which are accessible when using the sofa/comfy chair (fire rated).
- Ensure the room(s) is lockable from the inside. If this is not possible, then an ‘in-use’ sign must be present and visible from the outside. Guidance must be provided not to enter if the ‘in-use’ is displayed.
- Ensure the room(s) is part of the regular office cleaning regime (Refer to site accommodation: cleaning (in-house or subcontractor) section).
