It is essential that any areas occupied or used by people, plant, or equipment are properly illuminated.
The level of light required will depend on the activity. Generally, the more detailed the activity, the greater the light requirement.
Lighting can be procured through Magnor Plant, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure’s in-house plant and transport business, or through the All Together Site Solutions team.
All our supply chain family are aware of our plant and equipment minimum standards for lighting.
Site compound lighting
Site compound lighting includes all areas within the site such as entrance and exit points, driveways, car parks, walkways, lighting around facilities, storage and yard areas.
The site establishment team must:
- Ensure appropriate lighting is in place from the adoption of the site compound area. Torches (head or hand) are not classed as appropriate lighting for compounds.
- Assess the power supplies available within the compound, e.g. grid connection or generator/hybrid/battery power.
- Agree on the location of the lighting to ensure all parts of the compound have suitable illumination for the activities taking place in the designated area, e.g. parking car and walking to office/facilities entrance.
- Ensure a minimum of 10 Lux is achieved in medium traffic areas.
- Consider the location of overhead lines and structures when positioning lighting towers.

- Ensure staircases are illuminated and are set to switch on/off based on level of natural light, e.g. at dusk
- Ensure light pollution is kept to a minimum and does not impact neighbours or nature
- If the power supply is external to the lighting unit:
- Ensure all installation and connection work is undertaken by and qualified electrician the appropriate business unit electrical duty holder is involved
- Ensure all cables are appropriately buried/covered and secure.
- If the power supply is contained within the lighting unit, e.g. a towable tower light either hybrid or solar, portable tower light:
- Ensure the unit complies with Infrastructure plant and equipment minimum standards
- Operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance.
The site establishment team should consider:
- Asses solar options in line with the plant and equipment minimum standards. Solar options may require charging boosts in the winter months which will require access by a vehicle.
Reminder
Maintenance
- Where equipment is hired in the maintenance and inspection regime will be provided by the hiring company.
- Hard wired lighting must have an inspection and maintenance regime(Refer to site electrical supply section).
Task lighting
Lighting which is required for specific task must be based on the risk assessment and linked to the RAMS associated with the task and the designated company undertaking the work. Who is responsible for the provision of task lighting must be confirmed during the procurement process with subcontractors/supply chain.
